Alors que l’Iran subit les pressions de SWIFT, trouvera-t-elle du réconfort dans la cryptomonnaie ?
La suspension des services fournis par la Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Communications (SWIFT), basée en Belgique, à certaines banques iraniennes pourrait pousser l’Iran à lancer sa cryptomonnaie en attente. Cette mesure fait suite aux sanctions pétrolières et financières sévères imposées par les États-Unis à l’Iran.
De quoi s’agit-il au juste ?
Les États-Unis auraient réimposé des sanctions financières contre l’Iran et fait pression sur SWIFT pour qu’elle cesse de fournir ses services aux banques iraniennes figurant sur la liste noire. Ils ont rétabli les sanctions qui avaient été levées sous l’administration de Barack Obama avec l’accord nucléaire de 2015.
SWIFT est une plate-forme de messagerie basée en Belgique qui traite les paiements transfrontaliers. L’entité aide à connecter plus de 11 000 banques, entreprises et instituts financiers dans plus de 200 pays. Selon Al Jazeera, Steven Mnuchin, le secrétaire au Trésor américain, a déclaré que SWIFT serait sanctionné s’il continuait à « fournir des services aux banques iraniennes inscrites sur la liste noire de Washington ».
Ainsi, lorsque SWIFT cesse de fournir ses services à un pays donné, celui-ci peut être financièrement paralysé parce que le paiement des importations et la réception de l’argent pour les exportations deviennent difficiles. Le service de messagerie financière a fait valoir qu’il avait suspendu l’accès de certaines banques iraniennes « dans l’intérêt de la stabilité et de l’intégrité du système financier mondial au sens large ».
Bien que SWIFT se prétende être une » coopérative mondiale neutre « , cette évolution récente a soulevé de nombreuses questions quant à sa neutralité.
Si l’Iran est mis sur la liste noire par SWIFT, la chaleur montera, et les cryptomonnaies pourraient être considérées comme la seule lueur d’espoir.

Après des mois de spéculation, un document officiel a été publié par le président Hassan Rouhani en août révélant leurs plans concernant le lancement de la cryptomonnaie Rial qui est un stablecoin basé sur Hyperledger.
Compte tenu de l’évolution récente de la situation, on s’attend à ce que la Banque centrale d’Iran déploie sous peu sa nouvelle cryptomonnaie.
Seyeed Abotaleb Nafaji, PDG d’Informatics Services Corporation, a déclaré à ce propos que la Banque centrale d’Iran pourrait maintenant permettre aux banques iraniennes de l’utiliser comme instrument de paiement acceptable alors que le jeton en était encore à l’étape pilote et n’a pas encore été approuvé.
Sans aucun doute, faire face aux problèmes de SWIFT est une grosse affaire, mais il serait intéressant de voir comment l’état gère cela avec l’utilisation efficace de la cryptomonnaie.
