Sept grandes universités se sont associées pour développer un réseau de paiement basé sur la blockchain. Les universités, à savoir le Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), la Carnegie Mellon University, la Stanford University et la University of California, Berkeley et d’autres ont uni leurs forces pour trouver une solution commune qui aborde les problèmes de sécurité, de confidentialité et de performance des transactions financières transfrontalières.
L’application numérique s’appelle Unit-e et est financée par une organisation à but non lucratif basée en Suisse appelée Distributed Technology Research Foundation (DTR). Le système devrait être déployé au cours du deuxième semestre de 2019.
Il est prévu que le système de paiement traitera 5 000 à 10 000 transactions par seconde. C’est bien mieux que les réseaux Visa, qui traitent environ 1 700 transactions en moyenne. Par rapport au débit actuel de Bitcoin, il se situe entre 3,3 et 7 TPS alors qu’Ethereum parvient à atteindre 10 à 30 TPS. Cela représente un cas solide pour Unit-e.
Giulia Fanti, chercheur principal dans DTR et professeur adjoint en génie électrique et informatique à la Carnegie Mellon University, a déclaré dans un communiqué: «Au cours des 10 années écoulées depuis que le Bitcoin est apparu, les blockchains ont évolué d’une idée nouvelle à un domaine de la recherche universitaire. »
Il a ensuite ajouté: «Notre approche consiste d’abord à comprendre les limites fondamentales de la performance de la blockchain, puis à développer des solutions qui fonctionnent aussi près que possible de ces limites, avec des résultats pouvant être prouvés dans un cadre théorique rigoureux.»
Percée est sur son chemin
Des chercheurs de la DTR auraient écrit et publié 10 articles de recherche et fait référence au système de paiement décentralisé d’application comme étant une« application tueur» de la blockchain, et l’auraient comparé à ce que TCP / IP est destiné aux courriers électroniques.
Selon Joey Krug, membre du conseil de fondation de DTR, « un manque d’évolutivité empêche l’adoption de la crypto-monnaie, et la recherche novatrice de DTR s’y intéresse. »
Il est important de noter ici que la DTR n’est pas la seule entité à travailler dur pour améliorer l’évolutivité et les performances de la blockchain. Ce mois-ci seulement, une startup a déclaré avoir développé un protocole qui résoudra les principaux problèmes des réseaux blockchain, en traitant 8 millions de transactions par seconde.
